Chinese food in Atlanta

Had some great Chinese food in Atlanta the other week, most of the restaurants are located along Buford Highway, it's like a Chinatown there, but it's pretty small, and mixed with other Asian restaurants.

1. Peter Chang's Tasty (川娃儿)

It serves Szechuan food, so it's spicy and oily. Tastes pretty authentic, only it's a little bit salty.

2. China inn (六福)

The best Chinese restaurant so far, it serves very good Szechuan food, we had some nice chat with the waitress, the dish in the bottom right corner is so tasty!

3. Canton House (富丽华)

A typical Cantonese restaurant, serves dim sum and Cantonese food, not spicy. This restaurant, according to my friend, is hot spot for hosting wedding ceremonies.

4. Man Chun Hong (满天红)

The worst so far, it's in Korea Town, the dishes don't look good nor taste good, it could be it serves better Korean food, but if you are going for some authentic Chinese food, don't go there.

Got this little toy from Meritline.com for 99 cents, free shipping from Singapore. It's of credit card size so that you could put it in your wallet. Simply lift up the bulb-like transparent flat plastic and it's lit up by two LEDs beneath it. It comes in handy when you are in the dark and reaches into your wallet trying to find some changes. Good idea and good product for that price.

on the run

life's been on the run this month. Spent the first two weeks in Atlanta, New York, Shanghai and Jiangsu. Now I'm back in Hong Kong, it's a whole mess 'coz two assignments are due and two exams are approaching the following week and I need to make up all the courses missed through reading, reading, and reading! Hope to get it over with soon, comes April, life's full of sunshine again.

VISA to USA

never thought it would be this easy and fast to be granted VISA to USA in Hong Kong.

1. make application payment at Da Sing Bank and keep the receipt.
2. submit an application online, also book an appointment.
3. go to the Consulate General, submit your documentary and proofs.
4. leave your finger prints and talk to an officer, results will be disclosed to you right after the talk.
5. wait for 2 days till your visa attached to your passport arrives your house.

that's it. the whole process takes no more than four days, no tedious red tape to go through, and a one year-valid VISA to USA is approved even if I only requested to stay for three days. That's what they call efficiency. It took me one and half a months to get a three days-valid visa to Taiwan, and that's even under special circumstance. Politics can be very interesting....

Google Maps on Blackberry

Blackberry and PC in the back are displaying the same street view(somewhere outside Google's headquarter at Mountain View, CA). To enable this, you need to have some data plan(GPRS) with the service provider and download the app. to your blackberry, and also configure your APN to "cmnet"(not cmwap, but cmnet!) if China Mobile is providing the service, leave it blank if it's China Unicom. For a typical satellite image on blackberry, google maps would eat about 500kb to 1mb data flows. So large data plan is always better!

tips on making international calls in Mainland with HK SIM card

** the following tips only apply to PEOPLES customers.

when roaming in mainland China, and you need to call back to Hong Kong or foreign countries with HK SIM card (most SIM cards issued in mainland China cannot make international calls), follow these steps:

Calls to Hong Kong:

1. dial *138* (Hong Kong phone number) #
2. Wait for a return call. Upon receiving the call, you will be connected to the number you have dialed.

Calls to other countries:

1. dial *138*001 (country code) (area code) (phone number) #
2. Wait for a return call. Upon receiving the call, you will be connected to the number you have dialed.

some 5 dollars will be charged per minute for the services no matter the recipient answers it or not.


another tip: try avoid receiving incoming calls when roaming, because the service charge is a total RIP-OFF. Answering incoming call in Shenzhen, 6.48 HKD/min; in cities of Guangdong other than Shenzhen, 7.78 HKD/min; in provinces other than Guangdong, 12.78 HKD/min
